Deep, deep in the forest of no man’s land, live the families of all the animals in the forest. There was the family of the antelope, cattle, monkey, dogs, elephant, etc, and the lion. They all lived in peace. No one lived in fear of the other since there was enough for all to eat and drink. The king of the jungle, the lion was loved by all because of his bravery and so did he show love to all the animals by his leadership.

During the day time one would find all the animals’ lying under tress and enjoying the breeze that pass through their environment. The children of all the animals played together and jumped around without fear of being killed. In fact so peaceful was the jungle that one could even find the goat playing chess with the lion, or the fowl playing monopoly with the rat. All this came in to being because the supreme being of the animals “popokaka” loved them so much that he provided every thing they need.

One day as great “popokaka” was watching all the animals, he fell asleep. He unfortunately forgot to give these animals their daily ration and so hunger set in. The lion, king of the jungle was so hungry that he started to roar, the other animals were all equally hungry. The cock began to crow and the dog bark and all the animal began to complain. The oldest monkey “okake” who was very worried about what was happening suggested to the animals

okake: my fellow brethren what is happening today? We have woken up this morning to meet hunger greet us. Why don’t we go and see the king? Probably he knows what is happening.

The rest of the animals agreed with him, they all then marched to the palace of his majesty the lion king “Oduba”. Upon reaching there the monkey cried out.

Okake; oduba! the great, king of the forest and protector of the citizens of this jungle we call on you please hear us.

oduba; my people what do you want here today. Don’t you know one should not disturb the king especially today when he is very hungry?

okake: my dear king we are sorry. But that is just the reason why we are here today. we all woke up to find out that there was no food in our homes so we came to see you about the problem

oduba: well my dear subjects I also faced the same problem today. I just woke up and there is no food for me to eat I don’t know what is happening. What do you think we should do?

“kaka” the rat and spiritual head of the jungle said.

kaka: I think we should go to the mountain top and call on “popokaka” for help. If we have done any wrong then we ask for forgiveness

They all saw his idea as the best and so the king and the rat led the entire congregation to the mountain top to call on “popokaka” for divine assistance. when they got there kaka led the all the animals in a prayer to the “popokakka”

Kaka: oh great “popokaka” supreme lord of all the animals, we come to you today for help. We are very hungry and we need you assistance now. Please show us your mercy.

But there was no answer. He prayed and prayed for about seven hours but all to no avail. “popokaka” was asleep. All of a sudden the lion began to roar in a very loud voice, he looked at the faces of the animals in such a way that fear griped them. okake realized what could befall them said

okake: well my dear brethren I think I know what to do. I am going to get some food I stored some time ago. kaka: are you sure it would be enough for all of us. obuba; OOOOHHHHHAAAAAAAA.

okake: well I am going into the forest to get some food for all of you I will be back in no time. okake then run deep into the forest. He went so fast that he did not even know where he was going. The roar of the lion had put such fear in him. He then stopped at a point and started to think about what was going to happen to all the other animals if he did not get some food back home. He stood there for some time and taught for a very long time and realized the importance of the task. He became more and more confused and afraid. He did not know where he was since he was running fast and not looking at where he was going. He then sat under a big tree and started to cry. He cried till blood started coming from his eyes. All of a sudden the wind started to blow and the trunk of the tree opened. okake stood there in shock and fear he was about to run away when the tree talked to him. The tree said okake why are you crying. In shock okake told the tree of all that had happened and what was about to happen. The tree said so it’s because of food that you cry for blood to come from your eyes, he told okake to look deep into my trunk and take as much food as you can to your people and if hunger struck you again come back to me and cry till blood comes out. I will feed you again. okake then looked deep into the trunck of the tree took some food, ate, and then took as much as he could carry back to the jungle where he came from. When he got there the lion had caught hold of the rabbit and was about to devour it. okake then said

okake: oh my dear king, I have brought you all the food I got from the forest please leave the poor rabbit to live. The lion left rabbit rushed into the bags of okake and ate as much as he could. The rest of the animals joined after the lion had finished eating. This food lasted them for some few days and hunger again set in. okake then went back to the forest and as usual wept till blood came out then the tree opened up for okake to pick some food. This was happen for a long time and “popokaka” was still asleep. As time went on okake to become tired of the task. He then decided that he would not go back again to the difficult task of crying. He then assembled all the animals and told the

okake; my dear brethren since “popokaka” stopped listening to our prayers the great king has been trying to eat us. This shows how helpless we are. We must try to live for ourselves and by ourselves without any help or aid. Henceforth each one for himself God for us all. This made all the animals start thinking of what to do. The monkeys and his family decided to hang on the try to escape meeting the lion. The dog and his family run from the jungle and they were later spotted by the a hunter who like them so much he decided to keep them, so was the cat, goat, sheep, cattle etc, the birds decided to fly up above the sky to avoid the lion then the rat and his family made holes and went into small places where they could hide from the lion. For the big animals like the elephant, giraffes etc they just went further deep into the forest to avoid meeting the lion.

The next day when the lion woke up in hunger and met no other animal around he became very furious and decided then to kill any animal that comes its way and all the animals decided never to come in the way of the lion. “popokaka” after all these years is still sleeping so the jungle is still awaiting the time “popokaka” would wake up and unite his animals.
