Author: Paulette R. Buco

The distant howling of the train whistle in the early hours in Chariton brought the reality of the move into focus; exhausted from the drive, energy seemed distant as the train rolled in to thoughts of yesterday. Sleep, was only a memory now, and the senses of the day were becoming more and more a reality. The years brought reflection to the muscles in my body as they each saluted a greeting as I attempted to rise. The alarm glowed it’s time into my focus and it appeared indecent to be awakened at 5:00 AM. Slowly, old injuries announced their presence and I aimed my body toward the shower.

Here I am in a strange town, hoping that the decision, although almost instantaneous, was the right one, right now; it appears that the decision to arise was all wrong. The shower began to massage the muscles gently, like a waterfall in the Jamaica’s; forceful, yet relaxing. The water beaded on my flesh like crystals of energy and I could feel myself rejuvenating slowly. Time was finally lost and I engrossed myself in the pleasure of the gentle waterfall. Finally deceiving myself, I went to the kitchen to make coffee, the ever faithful vice that makes my day begin. Looking into the maze of boxes I became a fiend looking for the coffeemaker. Like a precious find there it lay gently in the box marked “Kitchen”. I raised it from its resting place like a chalice at the altar. Now for the venom itself, and then the awful thought, I never went shopping for groceries. Well, now was as good a time as any to find the local coffee shop and try there wares.

Dressing, out of a suitcase was not unfamiliar. The job I finally left had made it second nature. Twenty-Three years of traveling at a moments notice, working until all hours, meeting deadlines, making constant changes and raising a family had finally ended. I finally was one of the “R” people. Yup, I finally retired at the ripe old age of 59 going on 80. The years had taken there toll; but I was determined to enjoy whatever the remaining years are given to me. The umbilical whiplash seemed to be slowing down and the children, although grown adults, seemed to be settled in their ways. Today, I can go to the coffee shop and stay as long as I want no train, plane, bus, or shuttle to catch. I can really meet people and enjoy their company. I can hardly wait.

The car seemed strange to drive without hauling a trailer; it almost felt naked as I backed out of the driveway! Twenty hours of driving had marked itself neatly as dust on my car. The sunrise looked exceptionally beautiful and I made my way down the gravel road to town. I could almost taste the brew to my lips as I hit the pavement entering town. On the right, was a grocery store just opening, the employees lazily sauntered toward their day. The town square, which to my amazement, really is square, appeared almost ghost like. Not a soul to be found, my mouth gapped open in shock. Where is the coffee shop? I could see several little shops which could be coffee shops. My eyes strained to see the hours of business and it appeared nothing opened until 9:00 AM. Well, being proficient in U-Turns, I made my way back to the grocery store. Lo and behold, inside the door, a small cafeteria style concession and the aroma from the fresh coffee hypnotized my senses immediately. Like a vampire I lurched to the counter for my satisfaction. I ordered my coffee and grilled English muffin, with orange marmalade on the side and made my way to the French Café style seats near the side of the store. The elderly woman behind the counter wore a plastic label announcing her name “Ruth” she seemed friendly yet cautious as I was still a stranger to her. I grabbed a morning paper and began my routine. Thinking, I could kill two birds with one stone now. There I go muti-tasking again. Right after my coffee I can do the grocery shopping.

My eyes glanced through the local news and it brought a smile to my face; no murder, no rapes, no robberies, simply “noise complaint, dog barking”, “Suspicious vehicle parked on 12th street block”, “Disorderly conduct”, “Cat in tree”, and then I glanced back at “Ruth”, I made the right decision.

Finished with my coffee fix, I began my adventure through the grocery aisles, to my amazement; the store was not an epicurean paradise. I reminded myself, that I was not in the “Big City”, and convinced myself I can make do with what I have, besides, this is a new life, new beginning and new me. The ride back was beautiful, the rolling hills, the calves playing in the fields, horses gliding across green fields it was a small bit of paradise here on Earth. This was my first day, the unpacking will be an adventure, finding my life by unwrapping the past and putting it where it belongs and starting on my future.

There she sat in big bold letters in the driveway, the trailer that encapsulated my life. A time capsule. As soon as the groceries are placed I will begin the task of unloading the remaining boxes. I never imagined collecting so much; I thought I had weeded it out long ago.

My life in Boston was exciting and different, my move to West Virginia brought me back to reality and now my life in Iowa will give me adventure.

I am officially now an “R” person. Retired and Ready to Run. So I guess I am a three RRR person.
