Contest: June 30th, 2005

Author: Farzin Mojtabai

The summer of 1999 was to be one of the most memorable in my life. I was going to travel to my native country of Iran with my mother for the first time. I was to visit family members who were merely faces in a photo album. When I got to the airport I will never forget the culture shock that I felt; I was stepping into another world. When I met all of my family I was overjoyed and excited to no longer be an ocean’s length apart from the people who meant the most to me in life. Soon the mood changed. Driving along the streets of Tehran young kids pressed their faces up against car windows trying to sell flowers for mere pennies so they could eke by. This hurt me, but it was something I expected entering a third world country. What really pained me was when I saw people yelling at these kids and chastising their rudeness. This did not seem out of the ordinary either. I was also puzzled to see women draped in black cloth from head to toe in 100 degree weather. I would soon discover that this action was not voluntary rather it was a necessity for women to survive in Iran. That same summer college students were beaten, lashed and then tossed from the balconies of their dorm rooms for peacefully protesting harsh government policies. After the protests were crushed I could feel the broken glass from the dorm windows penetrating into my feet as I walked the busy streets of Tehran. It made me feel empty that these students felt that the only way to improve their lives was to end them. They were dying for basic human rights that had eluded them for so long. They felt that sacrificing their lives was the only way to preserve their lievelihoods. I learned that summer that having an opinion and having that opinion heard are two different things. It was scary for me to see my family attempting to hide the hardship they endured suffering through a brutal, unhealthy lifestyle that was imposed upon them against their will. If one of my family members were to unleash their true emotions, they would be killed. I still remember my younger cousins asking me “what is it like to live in paradise”? These words would affect me for the rest of my life. I discovered through my experiences in Iran that I am priveleged to have the opportunity to express my opinions without being presecuted, and to not do so would be an injustice to the people who continue to struggle to obtain such rights.
