Author: Dasha Tukanova

There once was a wise old man. The wisest in all the land. Villagers from near and far came to him to seek advice, and each time, he gave and gave and all the people prospered.

The wise man grew bored with giving advice to these mindless fools. The man realized whilst he had been helping all these people, he hadn't gained a thing. His life had been consumed with everyone else's problems. He had no family, no wife, no kids, no friends. He was intelligent, but unhappy, and what's the point of knowledge when you are unhappy? It was time for a change.

The old man put up a sign on his door: NO MORE ADVICE, and he left his home. He went to a nearby town and bought a brand new outfit with the gold coins he had been saving all these years. He cleaned himself up, cut his hair, put on his new clothes, and set out to find happiness.

He entered a few social habitats, attempting to mix in with the young crowds by playing dumb, but with no luck. He strolled the streets widely grinning at every passerby, only to recieve nothing but a harsh glance in return. As the day grew shorter, and the sky began to darken, his stroll became a slow, gloomy, meander. It seemed all hope was lost. There was no life for him as an average man, and no joy in being a wise man.

Just as the old man was about to head back home and return to his life as a wise but bitter hermit, he stumbled into a lost looking lady. He was quick with apologies, thinking the lady to give him a dirty look, shrug him off, and scurry along her way. But she smiled. She let her lips curve into a cresent shape and bring out her dimples. It was a genuine smile. And the man smiled back.

There they stood, smiling, long into the evening. They walked for a while, made some conversation. It was in fact even, intelligent conversation. They smiled and they talked until they were practically alone on the streets, besides the few night crawlers of the town. The lady realized it was time for her to go. "No" said the man, "Don't go, come home with me and stay with me, and together we can live and smile and talk of wise things." But the lady just shook her head. A sudden flash of dissapointment swept her face. "No" she said, "I must go, my family is waiting." And with that, she was gone. Gone into the night and out of his life. He walked his way home, not a trudge, but a simple walk. His usual walk, for he was back, back to his usual self.

The next day the sign on his door was gone, and a new heap of people piled in asking for advice. At this, the wise old man smiled.
