Author: Xiaohong Wang

When I first saw her walk into the room. She was nothing to me. If anything, the first thought that flashed into my mind was, she’s black. And she was. Her skin was coal black and looked to me, as if she had been caked from head to toe with a mixture of dirt, sludge, and gravel. I am unashamed to say that my second thought was Oh my God! She’s in GT?! That was in fourth grade. And I was greatly prejudiced. Everything that I grew up to taught me racism. The newspaper taught me that blacks commit the most murders. The economy taught me that blacks were poor because they could not sustain themselves. The daily walks in Washington D.C. taught me that most homeless people were black. My family had not meant for me to develop these opinions, but to me, I thought that it was perfectly normal. So when the new transfer student walked inside, I was shocked. They couldn’t. They shouldn’t!

As the days passed by, my unease grew. No longer was I sure that I was the smartest in my class. No longer was I sure that all blacks were stupid. I was no longer sure about anything that I believed in. It was as if my world decided to turn upside down and introduce me as well as my beliefs to reality. Still, despite all of the doubts that I was feeling, I continued to battle fiercely with her. I challenged her every opinion and countered every comment she said. I crouched in the shadows waiting for one wrong move. I was playing dirty, but it didn’t really matter. I had to reassure myself that everything that I grew up to believe and rely on was right and that she was the evil one, the one who was wrong. I grew more outspoken and more against her with every passing grade that she achieved. It got so bad that we even competed for reading books. What was once an enjoyable event for me was now a battle to decide who was smarter. I remember that she would flip through the pages like mad, and when I saw her pace, I was determined to prove that my race was better than hers. So determined that I failed to notice that she was exactly who I needed as a friend. So determined that I brushed aside any friendly comments she made to me. I was blind. Or so I thought.

Gradually as school year drew to a close, she agreed to a truce with me. However, the flame of competition that we had was not doused the least bit. We still competed, only there was one major difference. We were competing as friends. Now, I realize that instead of being blinded to her value, my eyes were actually wide open. Everything that was racist, I took in as correct. The sights that I saw controlled my racist views. But I am blind now. I am colorblind and I will never be able to judge another person again based on color. As for the black girl, she’s my best friend now, and she’s not black anymore. She’s just Mica. My other half.
