Rate This Contest Entry: Contest: June 30th, 2005 Author: Stephanie Herd Pictures of cute teddy bears and banks of oceans decorated the pink walls of the room which seemed to calm my nerves. My wife laid in the hospital bed, spread wide like a turkey ready to be stuffed. “You’re a bastard Joe for doing this to me,” Mya said through clenched teeth. She was pushing for the first time. Thirty-six hours of timed, rhythmic pain and she was finally allowed to push. “Push baby. Breathe in deeply and give a good push.” I don’t think my encouraging words were helping her. “Hun, you’re hurting my hand.” “Damn you and your hand. Damn every last part of you.” “Sweetie please, just breathe.” “Don’t sweetie me you jack ass,” she said while pushing for the second time. In that moment I pictured a set of horns protruding from her head. I must have chuckled louder then I intended to because Mya’s head snapped to look at me, a low growl escaping from her throat. I took two steps back and smiled. “You look lovely dear,” I told her. “Doctor, hand me the sharpest instrument you have. It’s time for my husband to join womanhood.” “Mrs. Duncan, please, concentrate on your breathing.” “Yeah honey, do as the Doc says.” Mya drew in a deep breath and pushed once again, her cheeks deepened with redness. I leaned over and brushed some stray strands of hair from her sweaty forehead. “Don’t touch me you pig!” “Mya, it’s almost over.” I pulled my hand away and looked to the doctor. “Mr. Duncan, perhaps it would be best if you waited --” “No, I’m staying.” Mya pushed again, her screams catching me off guard before my heart skipped a beat. “I see the head! Look Mya!” “Joe, I can’t do this. It hurts.” “Baby, one more push. It’s almost out.” She burst into tears as she pushed again and I began to cry as well. “Mya, we have a girl!” “Ten toes Joe?” “Yes, and ten fingers sweetie.” The doctor cleaned up the baby and placed her in Mya’s arms. Mya laughed as she cried, looking over her baby for the first time. I sat on the edge of the bed and watched both of my girls. “Mommy loves you very much Rebecca Lee,” she said. “Mya, she’s perfect,” I told my wife. “Joe, just shut up.” Rate This Entry!
