He is five years older than me and I thought him to be indestructible. Whenever I needed him he was there. He was my champion, my hero, nothing could hurt him. Or so I thought. It was just a normal day in December of 2000. It started out just like any other night. My mom got them ready and my brothers and father all piled into my oldest brother Shawn’s old, blue, Chevy pickup. It was a weekend so that meant it was movie night for my mother and me. We picked out a movie and started watching. The night was going just like any other, somewhere around the beginning of the third movie, a quiet snoring noise started to filter over from the couch my mother was now napping on. The third movie’s credits were just coming to an end when all of a sudden the silent household came alive with the ominous sound of a ringing phone. I jumped up and scampered into the kitchen, picking up the receiver I mumbled a hello. The voice on the other line was a frantic, and barely coherent. I was able to make out the words “Accident”, and “ Shawn’s hurt.” I raced back into the living room with the phone in my hand. I shook my mother awake and cried out, “Mom wake up! It’s Dad, Shawn’s been hurt.” She sprung awake and took the phone. She said in a surprisingly calm voice, “What happened?” I didn’t catch much of the conversation as my heart started to sink. Many thoughts went through my mind at the moment. Thoughts like “how is my brother hurt?” and “How bad?” Mom soon was off the phone and racing around the house grabbing her car keys and putting on her shoes. We then got a second phone call, once again from my father. They were flying my brother to Hamet Medical Center. My mom made the decision that I should stay that night with my grandparents. So she took me there and dropped me off before driving up to the hospital. That night was the hardest of my life. The not knowing left me restless. I didn’t sleep a wink, I couldn’t, I was too afraid for my brother’s life. The next morning my grandfather and I drove up to the hospital. My mother met me outside of Shawn’s hospital room. It was there she informed me that my brother had broken a bone in his leg, shattered his kneecap, cracked five vertebrates in his back and broken his jaw. Just hearing about the amount and severity of his injuries I was devastated. I thought to myself that can’t be, my brother could never be that hurt. It was soon time to see him for the first time since the accident. I stepped into that room and was taken aback by the sight that met me. Here was my strong immortal brother lying in a hospital bed with IV’s in his arm and an oxygen tube in his throat. He was covered in bruises, dried blood, and a makeshift cast on his leg. I walked over to his side and looked down at him. He looked up into my eyes and my composure faltered, I started to cry. I took my brother’s bruised hand and held it gently as I stood there crying my eyes out. I just couldn’t deal with the overwhelming emotion I felt. As I stood there, every memory I ever had with Shawn came flooding back. Memories of playing backyard football with my brothers and their friends when we were all back in grade school. Remembering how when I got a cut above my eye in the woods when I was five, how Shawn carried me all the way home. I thought about all the times Kris would be picking on me and Shawn would stand up for me. Yet then my mind drifted to all the fighting we had been doing as of late. It seemed that at that time my brother and I were drifting apart. We would argue over the littlest of things. As I stood there holding his hand I made a promise to myself that I would strive to have a much better relationship with my brother then I currently had. Shawn could have died that December night. That thought still disturbs me. In the days that followed my first visit to Shawn’s hospital bed my perspective on life started to change. I decided that I would take this accident and learn from it. I would no longer get stuck on the little things. I never wanted to be as naïve as I once was. My brother started to recover and I applied my newfound perspective to my life. As a result Shawn and my relationship is now back to what it was when we were kids. We rarely argue at all, and if we do it doesn’t last long. I hang out with my brother all the time. He is a very important person in my life. It has been four years since the day of his accident. Shawn has made a full recovery. His injuries may be healed but I will never forget how I felt the day I realized my brother wasn’t immortal. Shawn is still my hero, my champion, but he is not immortal.
