Rate This Contest Entry: Contest: June 30th, 2005 Author: Kathy Trang As I hear explosions boom in my ears, I stayed in my grandpa’s arm. Water running away from my eyes like it was scared, I worried. Asking myself “Where could mama and papa be”. My grandpa stroke my long hair and kept telling me, “Everything’s going to be okay.” The words ran through my head over and over again. It just replays over and over again. I lifted my head from the comfort of my dear grandpa’s chest and looked at the Viet soldiers who were fighting. One by one, they fell. I can hear the pain they feel. It just hurts me to see someone gone. Hearing cries from little girls and mothers. It aces my heart. Each second, I can hear a bomb exploding. The whole time, I heard people yelling in fear and pain. I couldn’t stand it. I wanted to do something, but what? I’m only an eight year old girl. How am I suppose to be capable to stop such madness like this? I wanted to help out people. I would, if I only could. My grandpa carried me up and ran quickly to a small wooden boat filled with some other people. A young boy pushed the boat out to the river and jumped on. All who were on the boat just looked at our hometown which is now a war zone. Are own people against each other. This is all madness, but no one could stop it. Things are just the way they are. Now, we must move on and let the wind take us where we are destined to be, either to the hands of death or the wings on heaven. Three years later, my grandpa and I were able to rent a small wooden house, big enough to fit both of us. My grandpa got a job in a supermarket, he didn’t make a lot of money, just enough to keep both of us alive. I’ve been trying to help him out. He’s getting really old and tired. The day we got into this house, I sat in my grandpa’s lap and hugged him. Never let go, never took my mind off him. I just didn’t know what I do without him. He loved me a lot and never stopped. He took care of me when at the first day when I was born and still does after the war. Grandma died a couple of years later, after I was born. My grandpa would always tell me that I was beautiful just like my grandma. He would hug me tight and say, “Trinh, your hair is the feeling of the gentle bamboos, your eyes sparkle like millions of stars in the blue and black sky, and your soul is the colors of the wind.” We were very poor and only had one bed big enough to fit one. My grandpa would always let me sleep on the bed even though I wished that he would sleep on the bed since he needs more rest than I do. He slept on the ground right beside me. Never out of my sight. Each night, I tell him that I love him and always will cause we all don’t know what might happen the next day, I never ever want to be separated from my grandpa. I have never wished to have money or wealth, what I always wished for is to be with my grandpa in a place so we can be together with unending happiness. One morning, I got up and rubbed my eyes. I looked to my left and gasped. “Grandpa where are you”, I yelled. I ran all around the house. Every time I ran, I felt like I was dying. “Grandpa!” I said over and over again. Tears ran down from my eyes like it was running away from fear. I ran outside and all around the house, still no sign of him. I ran back inside and looked where he was sleeping and was hoping this is all a nightmare but he was still not there. I broke down right there and cried. “Grandpa where are you?! I need you . . .” He opened the door holding a bag of food. I looked up and ran straight to him. He dropped the bags and hugged me. I was crying even more. “Trinh, what’s wrong?” he said bending down and wiping tears from my eyes. “Grandpa! Grandpa! I woke up and you weren’t here! I got scared! I thought you left me all alone! “, she ran into uncontrollable tears. It was hard for him to understand what I said out of all the crying and talking at the same time. She hugged him tighter. “I would never leave you. I just went to the store to buy some food. I’m sorry. I will never frighten you like that again. I promise”, I looked at him with happiness. The tears started to fade away. I looked at him and tried not to blink. I was scared if I blinked then he will disappear again. Looking at him with his white hair and golden face was like looking at an angel from heaven. “Where ever you go, I go. Where ever you live, I live. Whatever you do, I will always love you”, he smiled like the sun and right there, I knew this is all the happiness I can get. We both sat next to the bed eating an apple. “Trinh, “he said then he took out a small blue book full of empty pages.” We should start a little book about our lives, and the things that happen to us. This will be the chambers of our memories. Just you and me.” He said tickling my nose with him. I didn’t know what to say, so I just gave him a big smile that filled my whole face. We spent the whole day writing in that small book, or as we now call it, chambers of memories. A year later, the book was almost all filled. I was almost a full grown girl. I said to my grandpa as we were sitting on the bed. “Grandpa, I miss mama and papa, and even grandma even if I didn’t really know her.” He looked at me, all confused. “They all might not be here right now, but we should always know that they are always with us.” He smiled. “Let’s go outside and enjoy some the sunshine of this earth.” We both went outside. I clutch the books in my arms, protecting it like it was valuable as diamonds, but to me, it was way more valuable then diamonds. It was like my whole life. We stood in front of our home and stared at the sun. We could hear kids playing, birds chirping, and cars coming by. Then, I heard someone screamed, “WATCH OUT!” I looked behind me to see what was going on, but right when I turned a ball was about 3 inches away from hitting me. The ball bashed right into me. I fell and the book jumped into the street. I got up quickly as my grandpa was trying to help me. I ran right into the street ignoring everything else around me. A red vehicle was headed straight right at me, but all my attention was to the book, I was so happy that it was safe. I looked sideways and the car ran straight at me. When I woke up, all I heard was people talking and beeping. All I can see is blurs and bright lights. I didn’t know what was going on. I was scared. Then I felt something holding my hand. I got up. “Who are you? Why are you touching me? Where am I?” Thousands of questions popped in my mind. “Trinh, it’s me. Your grandpa.” Said the strange man. I didn’t know what he was talking about. I didn’t know what was going on. Everything hurts inside my mind. “Trinh, you got . . .” “GET AWAY FROM ME! WHO ARE YOU? I DON’T KNOW A GRANDPA LEAVE ME ALONE!” I yelled feeling so scared and angry at the same time. The strange person kept trying to calm me down. I didn’t have a clue who he was. Everything hurts inside my mind. I was so confused. A nurse came in. She pulled him away from me. She was whispering to him, I sort of understood what she was telling him even though it was really hard. “Sir, your granddaughter had lost a lot of blood from that car accident. She lost most of her memories. I don’t think she can remember a thing. Just let her rest.” He didn’t know what to say. I saw tears flowing in his eyes, and I wondered why. I got more confused every second. I looked at my left, and I saw a small blue book, with some blood on it. I read every single word in there. It was chain of memories.
