Rate This Contest Entry: Contest: June 30th, 2005 Author: Tamekia Jackson The Curly Haired Girl and the Hot Comb “Alright Kristina and Karen, it’s time for you guys to get ready for bed.” said Mama. “Oh Mama, can’t we stay up, just a little bit later, please? Asked Kristina. “Oh, no” replied Mama, “you two have to go to sleep now, we have a long day tomorrow and you have to get up early. Tomorrow is Karen’s big day, she gets her first press. “ “And I turn five” added Karen. “Yes you do, which is why you have to go to sleep, so you can wake up sooner and turn five sooner. Now go upstairs and brush your teeth, I‘ll be up to tuck you in in just a little while.“ said Mama Karen and Kristina run up the stairs and into the bathroom. Immediately Karen starts to brush her teeth, then she stops when she notices that Kristina isn’t doing the same. Karen turns to her and asks “What?” Kristina starts to laugh. “What’s so funny?” said Karen. Kristina continues laughing and starts to brush her teeth. Karen looks at Kristina confused. Kristina looks at her and then turns back to the mirror. Finally, Kristina says “You’re getting your hair pressed tomorrow, that’s all.” “So, I‘m excited” says Karen. Kristina replied “I don’t know why, it’s not fun. And the hot comb, well…” “What do you mean, I’ve watched you get lots of presses” Karen said nervously. “Yes, but do you remember my first press?” asked Kristina Karen thinks for a moment. “Just what I thought, actually, I know you don’t, because you were just a baby.” continued Kristina “But I remember it as if it were yesterday and it was terrifying,” Karen gasped “What do you mean terrifying, its just a comb. Right?” “Just a comb? Ha, just a comb?: That’s what they want you to think. Truthfully it has shiny sharp teeth and glowing red eyes and it breathes fire.” “What, breathes fire?” Karen thought about it a moment and then she decided that Kristina was just being mean again and she said “Whatever Kristina, you’re just being mean, you don’t know anything about anything. So There!” Then she stuck her tongue out at Kristina. “Really now, okay, believe what you want Karen, don’t come to me when the hot comb is after you.” Called Kristina as she walked down the hall to their room. “Whatever, she’s just trying to scare me.” thought Karen “besides, she doesn’t know anything about anything… but I’ll ask Mama just in case. That night, after Mama said goodnight to Kristina she began tucking in Karen and Karen asked “Mama, should I be scared about tomorrow?” “Scared of what?” replied Mama. “Scared of the hot comb. Kristina said that it had sharp teeth and breathed fire and that it was going to get me.” Karen said frantically. Mama laughed “No honey, she was just playing with you. There’s nothing to fear. You’ll see tomorrow, now you need to get to sleep my little curly haired girl.” Mama got up and walked to the door. “Goodnight girls” “Goodnight” said Kristina and Karen in unison. “Remember Karen” teased Kristina “get lots of sleep so you will be ready for your big day, because I know that the hot comb is. “No he’s not” said Karen confidently “Mama said that you were just trying to scare me, and I’ve decided that I’m not going to be scared by you. Goodnight.” With that, Karen rolled over to go to sleep. But she couldn’t sleep, she continued to think of Kristina’s description of the hot comb. After tossing and turning for what seems like hours, she finally fell asleep. The next thing she knew, her mom was waking her up. “Kristina, Karen, time to get up, we have to go soon.” Karen rolled over in her bed, realized that it was her big day and jumped up. She was full of energy and she noticed that Kristina was still fast asleep. Very carefully and quietly she got out of her bed and went over to Kristina’s. As she was getting ready to pounce on her, Kristina popped up with a picture of a hot comb in front of her face and said “I’m going to get you.” Karen screamed and ran to the bathroom as Kristina laughed loudly. Shortly after that they were in their car and on their way to their grandmother’s shop. For the entire car ride Karen thought about what she was going to do about the hot comb. On the way there, they stopped at McDonald’s, Karen’s favorite place to eat. While they were eating, Karen saw something rather strange. Sitting on the playground, looking at her was a hot comb. He was even worse than she had imagined. His eyes were bright red, and his teeth were shinier and sharper than she could‘ve imagined, and he wanted her. “Mama, mama, look, the hot comb.” she cried. Mama turned to look, but she saw nothing. “What are you talking about Karen I don’t see anything.” The hot comb wasn’t there, there was nothing there and Karen thought “Maybe I’m just seeing things.” While they were walking back to the car Karen noticed that the trunk was open. “That’s odd” remarked Mama as she walked by and shut the trunk. Karen was a little scared, she thought that the hot comb might be in the car, but she didn’t want to say anything because she wasn’t sure. Then, she heard something in the trunk. It seemed to be scratching at the seat, trying to get through, trying to get her. She yelled “Maamaaaa! It’s trying to get me.” “What, Karen what are you talking about?” asked Mama frantically. Karen answered, ” The hot comb, the hot comb, it’s trying to get me. It’s in the trunk.” Mama calmed down,” Karen we don’t have time for whatever issue you are having, get over it.” Will you please check the trunk though, just to make sure.” whimpered Karen. “Okay” said Mama, getting out of the car, “but you’re coming with me so you can see too.” Mama got Karen out of her car seat and they went around to open the trunk. As Mama opened the trunk Karen turned away, just in case the hot comb was there. But there was nothing there. “You can look now” said Mama, “there’s nothing t- Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!” As Mama was talking the hot comb popped up and hissed “I’m going to get you.” Karen took off running and the hot comb was right behind her hopping along. As she ran she saw that there was another hot comb coming at her. She started to run in another direction, but there was a hot comb coming towards her there. Every direction that she looked in she saw a hot comb and they were all coming for her. “Go away” yelled Karen, “Leave me alone, Go Away.” With no way out and tears streaming down her face, she suddenly heard “Karen , wake up.” It sounded like her mother, and the next thing she knew she was back in her bed being gently woken up by Mama. “Oh Mama, I had the worst dream” cried Karen “it was after me, the hot comb was trying to get me. It was everything Kristina said it was, but even worse.” “Hmmm” sighed Mama, “Karen I’m afraid that Kristina and your imagination have gotten the best of you. The hot comb is not out to get you or anyone else. It might be after the kinks in your hair, but that’s about it. I think Kristina has an apology to make.” continued Mama. “Kristina, get over here and tell Karen the truth about hot combs.” “Oh well see, ummm,” stumbled Kristina “the truth is that hot combs don’t come to life, and they don’t chase after people. I was just playing with you. I’m sorry Karen.” “ I forgive you” said Karen “And now I’m ready to go get my first press.” That day Karen did get her first press. She wasn’t exactly happy during it, but she wasn’t scared. And she loved the way that it looked afterward so much that she couldn’t wait until her next one. Karen also had a very happy birthday that was filled with surprises and presents, love and joy. After that day, she never thought about the hot comb chasing her again Warning: fopen(/home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3r_data/.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3_rating.php on line 69 Warning: fopen(/home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3r_data/.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3_rating.php on line 69 Warning: fopen(/home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3r_data/.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3_rating.php on line 69 Warning: fopen(/home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3r_data/.txt) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/writingc/public_html/entries/b3_rating/b3_rating.php on line 69 |
