My head was quickly filled with a sudden burst of pain. Although my head was screaming in agony, my thoughts were quickly interrupted by the sound of the jaws-of-life prying my car open, as if it was a coke can. It was done with such ease. Another big wave of pain ran through my head. It felt like nothing I had ever experienced before. Little did I know my condition was far more serious than a few minor scrapes and bruises. Flashes of red and blue swirling lights soon blurred my vision. My heavy eyes wanted to close. Then my mind was awoke to a voice saying, “Don’t worry ma’am, we'll get you out in a jiffy.” It was a very distinct male voice, but I couldn’t make out who he was. My eyes tried to pry the heavy weights off of my lids, but I was too tired. My eyes slowly started to roll back into my head. My body had been given into someone else’s hands as if i had no control. I tried with all my might to fight it; I tried really hard but it all of a sudden seemed as if someone dropped a whole heard of elephants on me. The pressure was so intense, it felt unbearable. My pain that was once in my head had now moved all through out my body in what seemed like seconds. My legs... where were they? I couldn’t feel them; I couldn’t move. I didn’t want to be pinned down. Why can’t they just let me out of here? I promise I won’t have anymore drinks. I swear, I didn’t see that turn. It all just happened so fast. If only... yes, if only, I could just go back. None of these would have ever happened. They finally were able to cut the roof off the car. “Ma’am, try not to move, please, we’ll have you out of here as soon as we can.” This time the voice seemed comforting and reassuring. My head felt as if it were to burst any minute. The pain. oh how it hurt so bad. I’d give anything to just go back. No party, no beers, i promise lord, i’ll be good! Why me? I didn’t mean to! But... that turn, i didn’t see it, why me? My body... Wow! Suddenly the herd was gone, no more pressure. What happened; i felt free. My body, I was moving, but where were they taking me? My eyes wandered around the thin night air for what seemed like hours. It was all a blur. I couldn’t make out any of these people. Who were they? I promise, I didn’t mean to! My eyes began to close, this time i didn’t fight it. Dark- darkness filled my every thought. Was this death? Surely not, I mean I- I promise, i didn’t mean to. When i woke up everyone greeted me as if i had been gone for years. They all seemed so happy, but why? Where was I? “Doc says she’s a lucky one. Most wouldn’t have made it. She sure is a fighter”, some strange woman said. She sure was pretty, but who was she? Why was she talking to my family? Why was she shining this bright -heavenly white- light into my eyes? “Follow the light” i heard the voice say again. A sudden gust of pain shot through my legs again. I bent down in my bed to move them, but wait! This can’t be right! Gone? No, i just missed the turn. Surely it was just a broken bone. This is all a bad dream. My legs! “OH MY GOSH!” i cried out in fear. Mom came running, she knew everything. Why me? Tears suddenly poured out onto my cheeks. It was a mistake, why me? I didn’t mean to! This was all wrong. Why would something so bad happen to a girl like me? I didn’t mean to. What about my life, im only 17! Doesn’t that mean anything? What about my friends? My boyfriend? Cheerleading? My life was so important to me. What will i do now? 6 months later... My boyfriend dumped me. I guess he didn’t want to be seen with a girl without any legs. If i had to deal with it, shouldn’t he? My friends all left me. They told me that I was a freak with no legs now. Cheerleading- well as for that, it was sort of not in the picture anymore. My life ruined by one dumb choice. A couple harmless beers; one quick drive home; nothing bad will happen. Choices- life is all about choices.
