One day the master bought a new slave, a young beautiful black girl by the name of Johana. When Simon saw her, he instantly fell in love with her. One day, at high noon, while Simon was working on the plantation, the master assigned Johana to work on the cotton picking which was directly next to where Simon was working. That day, when she was done picking the cotton seeds, she put them into the basket and started walking to the house to drop them off, but when she was exiting the house, she tripped on a leg of a table on which was the master’s lamp and the lamp broke into pieces. Scared for her life she quickly got back up, and started to try and fix the mess, and that’s when she first met Simon, he heard the crash and came to help out. Then when they were done, her told her to run off before the master came and when she ran the master just came down stairs with his whip and saw the missing lamp and a slave in his house, so he beat Simon, and Johana saw the beating and realized that he knew the master was coming. The next day while Simon was working on the plantation, Johana came with some nice cool water and a piece of cloth and started attending to his wounds saying she felt sorry for him, and he said that he did it for her. Ever since then, they have fell in love. Then one day, Johana saw a slave missing from the plantation and got curious as to did she disappear without the master knowing it. She asked one the elder slaves, and that’s when she learned of the underground railroad. As soon as she learned about this, she went to go tell Simon of the news she learned. As she was running, the master caught a glimpse of her leaving the cotton to run to another side of the plantation. He yelled from his room for her to get back to her post but she didn’t hear, so he then reached for his whip and made his way to the field. When Johana found Simon, she told him the whole deal right away and that she wanted to escape as soon as possible and have a family with him, he agreed and he told her that they’ll do it tomorrow but for now go back to her post before the master caught her. As she was going, the master caught up with her. He said that she would be made an example of the next morning. That next morning, before the master woke up, Simon and Johana met up and escaped together via the underground railroad. The made their way all the way up to New York. When they got there they looked for a place to stay and when they did, all was going well. But then one day while Simon was out at work, someone threw a brick through the window and it read “ I KNOW THAT YOU 2 SLAVES RAN FROM MY BROTHER, YOU WILL DIE!” Frightened by this letter, Johana started packing, and when Simon came back, he aided to, fearing that the next morning they might burn their house down. That next morning, they did burn the house down, but luckily the Bundicks made it out alive. As they were looking for a new home, someone kept watching them so every house they went to suffered the same fate. One day, Johana heard of a neighborhood where they protected one another from danger, the name of the neighborhood was Weeksvile. When they got there, they were openly invited to live there. And one day, a brick hit their window with the same old message, Johana started packing again but then their neighbor said that there was no need, and that just stay and the neighbors will take care of this. That next evening, Simon awoke to the sound of a loud commotion, when he looked out, it was a group of people standing outside of his house holding pitch forks and guns. The thing that was strange was that they were facing away from the house. So he then stepped out and realized that they were fighting off another group of people who were trying to burn his house again. After that, his neighbors said that they’ll always protect his family as long as they lived in Weeksville. Ever since then, the Bundick family has lived happily in Weeksville for the rest of their lives.
