Rate This Contest Entry: Contest: June 30th, 2005 Author: Rhiannon Nee-salvador Warra had been one of the most beautiful lions in the savannah since hew was born, which was a big problem for him. Humans hunted lions for their beautiful coats, and because Warra's fur coat was almost completely golden, he was an ideal target for poachers. He was a young adult who only had a small pride of three lioness's and himself. Two of the lioness's had cubs and the other was pregnant. Warra's life was full of danger, having to protect his cubs, his lioness's, his territory, and himself. It was a lazy summer afternoon. All the lions in Warra's pride were sleeping, trying to get the best of the sun's rays. The six cubs were playing not far off. Warra was so comfortable he almost didn't pick up the scent of three hyenas lurking in the bushes. They had only seen the cubs. The lions blended in with the brownish grass and weren't moving. Warra got up and followed his nose. A few yards ahead were three hyenas fleeing from the pride, but Warra wasn't stepping down that easily. Anyone who threatened his kin would pay. He began to run. He was a light lion and so could run extraordinarily fast. He had soon caught up to them and pounced on one. It went down easily, and by the time it was dead he other two were well out of range or sight. Bringing meat back to the pride would be strange because the lioness’s usually did the hunting, but the cubs were getting old enough to eat meat anyway. He picked up a back leg and dragged it along the ground. When he returned to the pride the cubs looked at him weirdly. The lioness’s weren’t so shocked. The lioness’s began to eat. Warra yawned. Perhaps a little longer before the cubs start eating meat. The next day, Warra awoke hearing one of the lioness’s calling her cub. She had three cubs but only two were by her side. The other one wasn’t answering her calls. Warra lowered his head to sniff the ground. He began to walk east. He only had a small piece of territory and the mother feared it had accidentally left it’s homeland. Warra was following the scent easily. It was pretty fresh so the cub obviously hadn’t gone by here too long ago. Then Warra saw movement in the long grass. It was the cub, but what he saw next wasn’t so relieving. Six hyenas were hiding in the grass. Warra gave a roar of warning, and before their chance had gone completely the hyenas came out of hiding to attack the cub. Warra roared in fury and ran toward the cub. He picked it up in his mouth and ran with the hyenas on his tail. He may have been able to chase away three of them but now there were twice as much. If he reached the pride then they would surely run away. But it looked as if the pride was coming to him. The lioness’s were running over. The cubs were following slowly. Warra but the cub in his mouth down with them and saw the hyenas were running away in fear. When the lioness’s came back they got the cubs and went back to the sunny spot they had the previous day. They were all relieved and Warra’s pride had no more problems...well, for a little while!
