MOMMAS HANDS

Emma and her family live in a small town in Iowa. She is twelve years old. Her brother, Nick is nine years old. They live on a small farm miles from town. They grow corn; have several cows and four horses. They live on the farm with just their father. Their mother died about 3 years earlier from cancer. Emma tries to help her father as much as possible and take care of Nick. Since her mom died it has been hard on her father. Emma has learned to cook some and do laundry. That helps her dad a lot. She also makes sure Nick gets ready for school in time and fixes his lunch for him. When they get home from school they help their dad feed the horses, the cats and dogs.

One day in the early fall a lot of dark clouds started rolling in. Father said to Emma and Nick, “It looks like a bad storm is rolling in. Let’s get the horses in the barn and make sure everything else is buckled down.” Emma and Nick run off to the pasture to get the horses. Emma said, “Nick, you get the two that are closer to the gate and I will get the other two.” Nick was back at the barn before Emma was. After he finished getting his two horses in the stalls, he helped Emma with hers. Their dad was making sure that the cows would be okay during the storm.

The minute that Emma and Nick were finished their dad walked in the barn and said, “Well, this looks like it’s going to be a bad one. We will need to stay in the root cellar for this one. You two go and make sure the house is all shut up and I will get the cellar ready for us.” Then he said, “You two hurry up now. The wind is already blowing hard.”

Emma and Nick ran toward the house as fast as they could and hurried in. They closed the doors and windows very fast and started to run back to the barn. As they were running to the barn a sound caught Emma’s attention. Then she remembered her favorite dog, Sandy. Sandy was in the dog lot because she had just had puppies three days ago. Emma stopped and started to run to the dog lot to get them. She knew they wouldn’t make it through this storm. Dad saw her turn around and started yelling for her. “Emma get back here now. There is no time to get those dogs. I saw a tornado headed this way.” Emma didn’t stop. Sandy is her favorite pet and the puppies were so cute. She grabbed a box to put the pups in and kept running. As she got to the lot she opened the door and Sandy ran out toward the barn. Emma gently picked the pups up and put them in the box. As she started back to the barn the wind had picked up so much that it was pushing her backward. She put her head down and just kept walking toward the barn. She could hear her dad yelling, “Just keep walking honey, you are almost here.” All of a sudden she felt something on her back. Like some ones hands on her pushing her along. Then she heard a soft voice say, “I am with you. I will help you get to the barn safely. I am always with you.” HER MOM! She had always felt a presence with her and now she knew. Her mom was always with her, helping her and loving her. As she reached the barn she softly said, “Thank you mom. I love you.” When her dad grabbed her by the arm it startled her. She then knew she had reached safety. They rushed to the root cellar and reunited Sandy with her puppies. As the storm raged outside Emma’s thoughts were on that moment when she felt her moms hand. She had missed her mom a lot since her death but now she knew that her mom was still there. Even though Emma couldn’t see her, she could still feel her presence. Her mom would always be there, keeping them all safe. Emma just sat back and let her mind wander. She didn’t even realize that the storm had ended until dad said, “Emma, wake up. The storm is over now.”
