I used to believe that the purpose of adversity was to weaken my resolve with obstacles, but after moving from Italy to the United States, I learned its true meaning. During the spring of 1999, I recall my whole family sitting on the floor of my living room in Modena, Italy, meticulously packing all our belongings which we collegted through the years. As we packed, each item stirred a long forgotten memory, making the process more difficult to endure. Days passed, and our home became emptier and emptier, metamorphosing into a lifeless shelter. On the day of the departure, we all rose along with the first rays of the sun. During the six hour flight, reality violently shocked me. Not only did I have to enter a new school, but I had to overcome the language barrier. With all that thinking, my mind fell into chaos. I was eager to see this new place. However I was also sad and frightened, because I had to start all over again. Trapped inside my mind, my mom's words repeated themselves like an echo. Saying, "It's for your own good. You will have more opportunities to become someone. We did it for you and your brothers." But I did not want to listen. While trying to fight back my tears, I tried to think what horrible thing I must had done to deserve this, but I found nothing. Upon arrival, school seemed impossible. Communication seemed to be the key to my failure. In order for me to complete the homework assignments, I had to translate the questions in Italian, answer them, and finally, change them back to English. Eventually, I succeeded in graduating from the sixth grade, but I wasn't satisfied. I didn't feel like I had mastered the language, so during the summer I decided to teach myself. Armed with an English book and a pencil, I began to go through the textbook. It wasn't easy, but I had a secret weapon. That weapon was, and still is persistence. After noticing my dedication, my parents decided to help me by hiring a private tutor. Today, the language barrier has been defeated; English is no longer a problem. During my four years of High School I have partecipated in various activities which have helped me to develop into a more intellectual person. During my difficult years years, I remembered my mother's words which left an indelible mark in my life:"When you find a hurdle in your path, don't avoid it, or you will become weaker. The best you can do is to tie your shoelaces, and try as hard as you can to make the jump. If it takes you ten times to get it, jump ten times until you get it. Briuses and pain are a part of the process, but in the end, you can look back at your accomplishments with pride." As a fountain of knowledge, my mother helped me with what she could, but then again, parents cannot always help their children. They sometimes had to let me fall so that I could learn how to get up by myself; such as adapting to this new place. Over the years, I learned that I can overcome any type of obstacle through perseverance and dogged determination. As every school year passed, I learned more and more from my mistaked, in an effort to make myself better than what I was before. Now, instead of complaining when I find an obstacle, the first thing that I do is forget the words "I cannot do it", and in times of distress, remember the lyrics of the song composed by the late singer Aaliyah: "When at first you don't succeed, push yourself up and try again."
