Rate This Contest Entry: Contest: June 30th, 2005 Author: Nancy Allan Do It All By Yourself “Just hold those two pieces of pipe together while I put the wrench around this nut,” is do- it -yourself talk for, “It would have worked if you had held the pipe the way I told you to” Beware the husband who brings home books from the library with titles like “Build your own Hot Tub for pennies A Day,” “Living room murals you can paint by number “and “So you Want to Build a Fountain in your back yard.” These books are all mis-filed. They should be placed under fiction for there are few happy endings in any of the projects. We once knew a couple who was so unique that the husband got involved in all kinds of projects and never asked for her help., She never once had to clean up the paint or wallpaper paste off the davenport, chair or carpet that weren’t even in the same room he was working on. We were invited to visit their home after he had worked for months putting in a recreation room in the basement. By hook or by crook he had talked the drywall into standing up straight for company. It almost quivered when we walked by. But the big triumph was the wallpaper. He had chosen a masculine, horsey theme. There were horses, all right, but he hadn’t bothered to match the fronts and backs at the seam line. The hind quarters with flowing tails stood alone and on two legs, never to catch the front head and back. The heads and rears ran helter- skelter throughout the basement. Our host was cheerful. “When you start seeing the whole horse you’ll know you’ve had too much to drink.” “But why didn’t you just match it? It’s easy,” I ventured. But he only smiled and answered, “Nothing is easy when you’re doing it yourself.” Ah, a man of wisdom. Now there was a couple that had a marriage made in heaven. The man should have been locked up before he did any more damage, but his wife loved his little failures and never once suggested that not everyone is cut out to be a “project person.” I am seriously thinking of writing my own set of do-it-yourself books. Volume one will. contain, “Turn off that Power Saw—You don’t even have a License,” Volume two, “My Dream Kitchen Does not Even Have you In it.” The last volume asks the age-old question, “Will the Cement Ever Dry?” I have been doing some research and discovered how the term “do-it-yourself” got started Adam told Eve “We must build us a shelter.” Eve munched her apple and replied, “For heaven sake, do it thyself.” Rate This Entry!
