Author: Rachael Strayer

Steve was one of those popular guys that half of the student females wanted to be with. Steve, a tall guy about 5’9” had just turned eighteen in January. He had a go-tee and straight, brown hair. Steve was a son and a big brother to a brother and a sister, whom he loved very much. He was the captain on the football team.

Steve was extremely board. It was eighth period and he had trigonometry. The only sound was the squeaking of the chalk on the board. The teacher had hardly said a word, which in the student’s case it was all right because Mr. Bubbles was a monotone teacher, who was extremely hard to pay attention to. It was Friday and the students had a hard time concentrating on anything anyhow. Steve was too busy daydreaming. He was thinking about the big blow out party that his best friend Kyle would have. He was also busy thinking of the girl that he wanted to ask to the party. Her name was Electra; she was about 5’6”, and the captain of the softball team. She had light brown hair, which accented her eyes. When Steve daydreamed, he lost all sense of time. The bell had rung and Steve’s good friend tapped him on the shoulder.

“Hey man it’s time to go” Shane exclaimed. Indeed it was two o’clock.

“Thanks man”. Steve said in a hurry.

Steve walked down the hall with Kyle. Kyle you could say wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, but he was street smart. Kyle couldn’t wait to tell Steve more about the big blow out party. It might get you wondering how Kyle could have all of these parties and get away with it. Well his parents were very busy people. They were constantly on business trips and out of town. They were seldom ever home. Each week they would send Kyle money. This was how he could afford to throw these big parties. Kyle asked Steve

“Are you coming to my party man? It’s going to be the biggest one yet”.

“Yeah I will be there, is it ok if I bring Electra with me?” Steve answered.

“Yeah homie bring her along, you know that my parties are off the wall,” Kyle bragged jokingly.

“Hey man come in close I’ve got to ask you a question about something,” Kyle leaned in and Steve asked, “Is there going to be weed at your party?”

“Yeah there will be weed, and alcohol,” Kyle replied just as quietly. “You know that I don’t really drink, but the drugs would help me to relax. I had a really stressful week. Ky meet me after school its not safe to talk about this here,” Steve grumbled quietly.

“That’s cool”, and Kyle was on his way to Spanish. Steve had a study hall the last period of the day with Electra. That would be his opportunity to ask her if she would like to come with him to the party.

Electra was sitting in the fourth row in the third seat. This was the opportunity that he had been waiting for. That was the seat right in front of the one that he always sat in. Well he had to make up his mind. There was sweat running down his face, his cheeks were red hot like the days of summer. He walked to his seat and looked down at her. She looked up and said, “Oh my gosh Steve are you all right? You look like you are going to pass out.”

“No I’m all right, but I wanted to ask you something,” Steve said as embarrassed as he was. There was a long pause as there eyes looked and embraced one another Electra softly said

“What is it that you would like to ask me?” Steve thought to himself quickly and finally said in a low voice,

“Would you like to go to a party with me this weekend?” Electra eyes widened. She looked up and he looked down. Their eyes embraced each other’s, and she said,

“I would love to.” The last forty-five minutes were used not to do homework but to discuss the upcoming day.

“Then I will pick you up at eight o’clock,” said Steve.” Electra paused jokingly, and said

“No that’s not ok, how about eight o’five?”

“Such a smarty pants,” Steve replied.

It was already three o’clock and everyone was ready to go home. The week had seemed to be the longest one of all. Steve met up with Kyle and Steve drove him home in his Mitsubishi Eclipse. They discussed how they would get ready for this big knock out party. They had gotten to Kyle’s house in no time.

“Hey man I will see you tomorrow around eight-thirty,” said Steve. “Oh yeah Electra is coming with me tomorrow.”

“Off the wall Steve, I’m glad that you two love birds can make it.”

“Well I will see you tomorrow”.

“Ight Steve, will do”.

On the drive home Steve felt so light and happy. He couldn’t remember when he had felt this good about anything. As he pulled into the driveway something seemed different. Mom and Dad’s car is not here. Had they gone to the store? Had they gone on a trip? Or maybe this was just a trick. When Steve opened up the door to the house, it was empty. There was an envelope. On the outside it read Steve. He felt that this was a little bit weird. On the inside was a letter. It read: Steve, Please take care of the house; you are eighteen, and we are counting on you. Your father and I had to go and redo the roof on grandma’s house. Your sister and brother are with us and if you have any questions, then call us on the cell 956-8880. You know the number but just in case you forgot. There is two-hundred dollars in the jar in the back of the refrigerator. Please don’t spend it all in one spot. I love you very much, Love, Mom. This was shaping up to be the best weekend ever. No mom, dad, or siblings, Electra was going with him to the party. He could go and relax at Kyle’s. The rest of the day was spent doing his homework so that he didn’t have to do it on the weekend. After the homework Steve called and ordered a pizza and watched TV. By the time his movie was over it was twelve o’clock and he was ready to go to bed.

Chapter 2

By the time that Steve had wokeup, it was one o’clock and he had a message on the answering machine. He got a glass of orange juice and pressed the smooth, white play back button. The message was from Kyle. It said something like “Hey man get up, I need you to come over to my house and pick me up and take me to get my prescription.” Steve crawled upstairs lazily and got dressed. He slipped on his sneakers and walked down the flight of stairs. He grabbed his keys off of the counter and walked out the door. He started the car. It sounded like a cat purring, as he went to go pick up Kyle. Kyle came running out of the house as Steve drove up. Kyle quickly opened the door and jumped in. They started to back out of the driveway when Kyle said,

“Hey man you wouldn’t happen to have fifty dollars would you?” Steve said

“Why?”

“Because if I have fifty dollars more then I could get a bigger bag of weed,” Kyle said.

“Yeah I’ll give it to you but none of this gets back to my parent’s ight?” Steve said slowly.

“You got it Steve the man,” Kyle replied

As they pulled up slowly to the attentive alleyway that Kyle got the drugs from he slowly got out of the car. Being vary cautious to any particular movement, Steve stayed with the car. They had the window down because it was about sixty-five degrees outside. There was a horrible consuming smell that was so horrible it felt like was a death grip from god. Seeing this place had made Steve’s attitude turn around. He felt bad that people had to live this way, but for some reason he knew that god had a reason for doing this. Kyle walked up slowly to one of the doors and knocked. A child in his early teens came to the door.

“Are you Pedro?”

“Yes, what is it that you want?”

“We got the cash. You want to sell.” Kyle may not have been the smartest kid in the world but he could talk cash and drugs to someone.

“Who is in the car with you?”

“My partner in crime, now are you willing to sell or not?”

“Yes, come in for a moment.” After what seemed to be forever they came out of the house.

“We’ll see you again sometime”.

“No problem amigos just glad I could help.” Steve opened his eyes and looked over at Kyle. Steve opened the doors and started back to Kyle’s. There was nothing said, but the radio was on low. They pulled up into the driveway and Kyle said, “Thank you for the ride,”

“You’re welcome, see you tonight”.

The night seemed to take forever to arrive. It was finally the hour before he had to pick up Electra. He ran up the stairs to take a shower. Needless to say that the shower was to cold, Steve tripped on a bar of soap, and as he was washing his hair the shampoo ran into his eyes and burned like the sun does to your skin in the mid-summer months. He turned off the shower and jumped out. Dried off and put on a white beater and a button up pullover shirt. His pants were khaki jeans, and the shoes were dressy black half boots that were so shiny because he only wore them on special occasions. It was seven-fort-five by the time he looked at his watch.

Steve ran down the stairs grabbed the money that was in the jar in the refrigerator, grabbed his keys and ran out the door. It wasn’t like him to be late so. That’s why he is running around frantically. He ran out the door and quickly shut it behind him without locking it. He got into the car, slammed the door shut, and sped down the road. Electra was just finishing her hair when Steven pulled into the driveway. She went down the stairs, and said good by to her mother and waited for Steve. He had stopped at a roadside flower stand. Steve had gotten her a rose for the “date”. He walked up to the house and rang the doorbell “Ding, dong”. She answered the door in casual dress. Her eyes seemed to glitter with her long brown hair. Steve then broke the silence and said, “You look very nice tonight”. He then leaned down and took her hand and softly kissed it. Electra said, “All that was sweet of you”. Steve then took her by the hand and walked her down to the car. He opened the passenger door for her and helped her in then closed it. Then he got into the car. The rose was sitting on dashboard where she would be shur to recognize it. After she had placed her seat belt in the buckle she looked ahead and got a huge smile. They were closer than they would have ever expected to the night they would never forget.

Chapter 3

They pulled into the driveway at five minutes until eight-thirty. Steve got out of the car and shut his door. Then he went over to open Electra’s door and help her out of the car. They walked up to the house hand in hand. Kyle knew that they were there because he anxiously looked out the window and awaited their arrival. He headed straight to the door and opened it.

“Hey guys and welcome to the party”. There was a long pause as Steve and Electra looked around at the decorations and how many people were already there.

“Hey Kyle looks like an awesome party”.

“Yeah it’s a bigger and better party now that you two are here”. “Well make your self at home and have fun,” Kyle exclaimed.

“There are drinks out in the kitchen,”

“Thanks G’ we’ll get to the party”.

Electra and Steve were having so much fun. They drank a little, they danced, and they talked. Steve introduced Electra to almost all of his friends. There was David. There was also Matt and so on. Kyle came down the stairs and met up with Steve.

“Hey Steve are you ready?” Kyle whispered into Steve’s ear.

“Yeah let’s go. Electra would you like to sit here? I have to go break up a fight upstairs.” “ Sure I was a little wore out anyhow”.

Kyle led the way upstairs to go “Break Up The Fight”. They went into Kyle’s bedroom and sat down on the bed. Kyle slowly pulled out a black colored plastic case. It contained a weed pipe that looked like a regular pipe, but it had a dragon on the side and it was metal. The container also contained an eighth of weed. Kyle had broken it up and hid it in different places. There were a couple of people who were also going to smoke up with them. They had started with Kyle and then passed it around in a circle. As this was going on Electra had to use the bathroom. She walked up the stairs and went to look for the bathroom. The first door that she looked in was a closet. The second one was Kyle’s parent’s bedroom. The third one there was a lot of laughing coming out of it. Electra opened it so that there was a little crack so she could see in. She opened it just in time to see Steve take a hit from the pipe. She could smell the disgusting smell of the weed. It smelled like leaves burning. She slammed open the door. “What in the world doing your doing?” Electra screamed at the top of her lungs.

“Electra this isn’t what you think”.

“Not what I think? Why would you bring me here if you were going to do something like that? Steve I never want to see you again!”

“No Electra please come back”.

Steve had lost the only person in his life that meant anything to him. She ran out of the room crying, down the stairs, out the front door and down the sidewalk. Steve followed. He got in his car to follow her. He was now high and intoxicated, and his judgment was very unstable. Electra was running down the sidewalk. Her friend had a house just a little bit down the road. Steve was going about 45-50 miles per hour trying to get to Electra before she could tell anyone. Electra ran across the street. Just then Steve came around the corner and all you could hear was screaming, yelling, screeching, and the cracking of bones. Steve hit his head off of the steering wheel and broke his arm. He slowly came to. He opened the door with his left hand and slowly got out. There were fire trucks and ambulances and police and paramedics. He walked toward the front of the car and looked at Electra through. She was still alive but barely. She took the last bit of energy and looked up at Steve.

“I love you, but I can never forgive you”. He put his left hand under her head and held it as she took her last breath. He then slowly placed it on the pavement. Tears started to well in his eyes. A policeman came over to him

“Son, are you the driver of this car?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Son, I’m sorry but you’re under arrest for the murder of Electra Pophal”. “Officer, can I please go to the hospital?”

“What for Son?”

“I’m not feeling well and I broke my arm”.

“Yes, but I am going to need to accompany you.”

Steve went to the hospital that night. With in the next few weeks was sentenced to life in jail, for the murder of Electra Pophal.
