"What no puppies"? I said to David my step dad.
"Nope no puppies" he replied walking to the car. Normally we took the dogs on our morning commute to the bus stop which was way out in Airway Heights about a 30 min drive from where we live.
I walked outside and closed the door. On my way I noticed that something was missing. "Whoa" I said, "I’m completely forgetting my backpack".
I walked back up to the house and tried to open the door but my step dad had locked it, I saw my brother Keith inside. "Hey"! I yelled and banged on the window. "What" he mouthed while shrugging his shoulders and I giggled the door handle. He came up to the door and unlocked it, as soon as I walked in the door he turned around and headed towards our room to get something which surprised me because I was expecting him to say something rude.
I grabbed my backpack and headed back outside Keith right behind me. "Don't forget to lock the door" I said looking over my shoulder.
"Bye" he said to our mom.
"Bye" I said.
"See you later"
We went to the car and hopped inside. "Wow, it is cold out there"
"Yup" my brother said. My step dad leaned forward and turned up the heat.
"That should help"
"Hopefully" my sister said, "I'm freezing". We started down the road and took a left.
"So why aren't we taking the puppies"? I asked.
"Because, that way David doesn't have to come back and drop them off" my sister said not looking up from her phone.
"Oh" I said as we started down the South Hill.
"Not bringing the dogs is a bad omen" My brother said.
"Yeah" I said joining in the joke, "something bad going to happen"
"Well they haven't come for the past two weeks and nothings happened yet so I'm not worried" Jordyn said still not looking up.
"Well, I'm sure your bad karma has been accumulating"
"Sure it has" she said sarcastically. I looked over at my brother who was starting to fall asleep. We were coming up to an intersection and the light was green so we continued going forward when out of nowhere from the left someone started to run the red light and we couldn't stop on time. He hit the front left part of the car. Because of the jolt my brother snapped awake and my sister stopped texting people on her cell phone.
"Whoa" my brother said. The truck that hit us pulled over near the church across the street and came over. My step dad hopped out of the car and the two men started talking. Then a cop came up to the two men, he had been undercover and only a couple of cars behind us. They stopped talking and David hopped into the car.
"So, what did he say" I asked.
"He told the cop it was his fault"
"Really"? My brother said, he apparently didn't think that the man would.
"Yup" he said starting the car so we could pull up behind the truck.
"Well" I said, "I think one thing one thing is clear"
"What" my sister said dialing my mom's number.
"We won't forget the dogs next time will we"? |
