| A Competition with Time |

The old clock of the tower in the local park was showing one minute to eight. The red traffic light changed and all the cars rushed in the street. People, hurrying for work, were running towards the bus, which was ready to join the mad zeal of the automobiles. A plane was flying at a space speed somewhere high in the sky. The old clock in the park beat eight times.
Cars, buses, planes – these all are instruments in our constant competition with time. People develop them to be faster and faster. On the other hand, our rival – Time, flows always at the same speed. Second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, with the confidence of an invincible contestant. It never hurries and never stops; time just goes and goes closer and closer to its triumph over man.
We have always been afraid of this triumph of time. The ancient people escaped from this thought by the notion of the cycles of time. A moment, a day, a year has passed but a new one is coming. This idea has been later implicated in the round face of the clock, a symbol of eternity. Today we realize that although Time is ceaselessly flowing, human time is not. We have lost the competition from the beginning itself.
Than, why do we continue this senseless rush? What do we gain and lose in it? The answer is simple – we gain nothing but lose everything. Our cunning rival, Time, has driven us mad to hurry and waste Our time. We celebrate the New Year but do not think for the old one which has irrevocably gone by. And Time triumphs over us. We hurry to live but never stop to live.
In conclusion I suggest: let’s leave time flying, let’s cease our rush, let’s just live at a normal pace. When I get on the bus I won’t anymore think about the work I will have to do but enjoy the trip. I won’t think about the next moment but enjoy the present one. And when will You start to live? Perhaps next week, tomorrow, now? |
